Position Overview:

Assist in implementing strategies and innovative approaches to broaden access to education for all with a focus on the immigrant experience. This role will focus on collaborating across various activities related to the Access to Education Program such as elementary education, adult education, and other opportunities as they arise. On a weekly basis, this individual may spend their days working on ESOL classes, coordinating tutoring, and doing research on best practices in supporting immigrant integration through education.

Primary Job Functions (70%)

ESOL
  • Coordinate, prepare and oversee classes in-person and online.
  • Teach classes when needed.
  • Communicate with students and volunteers.
  • Track student attendance and volunteer hours.
  • Provide assistance to volunteers before and after classes.
  • Administer CASAS test to students.
  • Create lesson plans that align with our mission.
  • Create assessments for lesson plans
  • Coordinate with partner organizations.

Elementary Tutoring (10%)

  • Plan, coordinate and oversee elementary tutoring sessions in-person and online.
  • Track student attendance and performance.
  • Give instructions to students in-person and online when needed.
  • Provide assistance to volunteers during sessions and track their hours.
  • Communicate with parents and volunteers about students’ progress.
  • Provide parents with support to understand the school system and schools’ platforms.
  • Assist parents with teacher conferences and translation of documents.

Hope Rising (20%)

  • Provide information to students, adults and parents regarding college admissions process including applications, standardized testing, financial aid and high school preparation. This includes technical school education when applicable.
  • Provide assistance in locating and using college/career information as needed for post-high school planning.
  • Assist in the plan and implement career events (career days, career month, job fairs, or college fairs). Arrange guest speakers from the local business community to present information regarding specific occupations.
  • Assist in scheduling visits to local colleges and career-related events and opportunities for students to learn about higher education and vocational training and preparation.
  • Provide career/college informational presentations to community groups as needed. (Middle schools, high schools, parents, adults seeking to continue their education, community organizations, and migrant education programs.)
  • Assist Monthly meetings with scholarship students and leadership groups. These meetings seek to create a leadership pipeline for youth to become more civically engaged.
  • Provide assistance in completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

Other Duties:

  • Coordinate and oversee OCPS school registration events.
  • Support program participants through enrollment in programs at Hope CommUnity Center and local schools.
  • Maintain an accurate database of program participants, their activities and progress when applicable.
  • Data entry as required by different grants.
  • Work with volunteer coordinator to engage the students in civic engagement requirements.
  • Advocate alongside parents and students to support their needs as it relates to their educational success.
  • Other administrative duties as assigned.

  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish/Creole desirable but not required.)

Position Overview

The Immigration Program Assistant works with Hope CommUnity Center’s Immigration/Citizenship Program and supports the Citizenship Program Manager and the Legal Services Program Manager with data, administrative tasks, and community outreach to support the program’s goals.

Essential Job Functions and Tasks

  • Builds partnerships and alliances and delivers educational presentations with other organizations,
  • churches, consulates, colleges, high schools, and individuals focused on Citizenship.
  • Develops a supportive relationship with participants of HCC’s community to make them aware of Citizenship classes and legal services and promote leadership among programs participants.
  • Assists with the organization and implementation of Citizenship classes.
  • Collaborates with and provides backup support as needed to the Citizenship Program.
  • Prepares data for computer entry by compiling and sorting information.
  • Maintains and inputs student attendance and quiz scores naturalization screening, submission, and oath data, hours served by volunteers.
  • Maintains quarterly book inventory data.
  • Tracks and updates program income.
  • Perform translation of personal documents.
  • Make and answer high-volume phone calls related to immigration and legal services.
  • Assists Citizenship Program Manager with electronic/physical student record filing.
  • Provide data to Director of Immigration Program for quarterly and annual program/reports.
  • Supports Citizenship Program Manager with data in preparation of quarterly grant report.
  • Maintains student confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.
  • Engage in Staff and Immigration meetings.
  • Other tasks as needed.

Summary/Objective: LGBTQ+ & Immigrant Justice Community Organizing

Hope CommUnity Center is hiring a full-time LGBTQ+ and Immigrant Justice Community Organizer Manager. HCC is a grass roots community organization that works to stand in  solidarity with immigrants and all who are tenacious and courageous against all systems of oppression. This includes LGBTQ+ immigrants and our siblings in the LGBTQ+ community fighting for fair treatment, dignity, and respect.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a passionate, strategic, and dedicated leader to work with colleagues and externa partners alike to bring meaningful positive change to Central Florida’s vulnerable communities. This organizer will design, and lead HCC’s flagship program aimed at empowering and organizing LGBTQ+ immigrants- Queer and Trans Immigrants (QTIs). They will also be responsible for planning HCC’s annual Apopka Pride. They will also become a leader in HCC’s civic engagement and leadership development initiatives such as Hope CommUniversity. They will lead the process of working with volunteers to create and implement a strategic community organizing plan to build neighborhood committees led by LGBTQ+ immigrants for long-term power in Central Florida.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Experience as a seasoned community organizer. Capacity to recruit community members, speak articulately about issues affecting immigrants, women, LGBTQ+, and Black communities to develop campaign strategy to move the needle in Central Florida on an array of issues impacting our communities.
  • Strong understanding of local civic and political landscape.
  • Strong project managing skills
  • Ability to organize events such as Apopka Pride, Trans Day of Remembrance, rallies, protests, trainings, etc.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Knowledge about LGBTQ+ immigrant lived experience and laws affecting this segment of the immigrant community in Florida.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with HCC colleagues, as well as community partners.

  • Comfort with public speaking, including conducting political and community education, facilitating groups, speaking with the media about matters affecting vulnerable populations, and conducting training of colleagues and volunteers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to develop outreach and implementation strategies for organizing immigration forums and facilitating Know Your Rights and Dignity Planning Trainings at Hope and in community based facilities convenient to the affected community.
