Immigrant Heritage Month

Honoring the Legacy and Impact of Immigrants in Central Florida

Immigrant Heritage Month is a time to recognize and celebrate immigrants’ countless contributions to the United States. At the heart of this celebration, Hope CommUnity Center stands as a beacon of support and empowerment for immigrant communities in Central Florida.

The hands and dreams of immigrants have shaped the United States. At least 45.3 million immigrants, representing 13.6% of the U.S. population, have played a crucial role in the building and growth of this country, from the ancestors of many who came seeking better opportunities to those arriving today in search of asylum.

Cultural diversity, innovation, and immigrants’ resilience have enriched American society in all its aspects, from the economy to the arts, science, and education.

The Value of Immigrants in Central Florida

Florida is one of the top destinations for immigrants in the United States, and in Central Florida, the immigrant community has flourished thanks to their hard work and dedication. Immigrants in this region contribute significantly to the local economy, playing vital roles in agriculture, construction, tourism, and other essential sectors. Moreover, they enrich the community with cultural diversity, promoting understanding and cooperation among ethnic groups.

Hope CommUnity Center Empowers Immigrants

Hope Community Center tirelessly supports and empowers immigrants in Central Florida. This month, we honor and strengthen our commitment to providing educational resources, legal assistance, and emotional support to immigrant communities. Our programs promote integration and empowerment, helping immigrants overcome challenges and build a better future for themselves and their families.

The Reality of Immigration Policies

Despite the valuable contributions of immigrants, immigration policies in the United States have been, and continue to be, a political battleground. As our Executive Director Felipe Sousa-Lazaballet mentions in an article for the Orlando Sentinel, the lack of action from Congress and repressive state-level policies have created a humanitarian crisis affecting thousands of people: “Asylum seekers, undocumented youth, and immigrants in Central Florida for decades are used as pawns in a political chess game where everyone loses.” They face increasingly challenging situations due to legislative inaction and broken promises.

During Immigrant Heritage Month, let’s honor immigrants’ contributions and advocate for fair and humane policies that reflect the foundational values of the United States. This country’s history is intrinsically linked to immigrants, and our responsibility is to ensure their rights are protected and their voices heard.

Let us celebrate the richness that immigrants bring to our community!
