At least 45.3 million immigrants, representing 13.6% of the U.S. population, have played a crucial role in the building and growth of this country, from the ancestors of many who came seeking better opportunities to those arriving today in search of asylum.

The Reality of Immigration Policies

Despite the valuable contributions of immigrants, immigration policies in the United States have been, and continue to be, a political battleground. As our Executive Director Felipe Sousa-Lazaballet mentions in an article for the Orlando Sentinel, the lack of action from Congress and repressive state-level policies have created a humanitarian crisis affecting thousands of people: “Asylum seekers, undocumented youth, and immigrants in Central Florida for decades are used as pawns in a political chess game where everyone loses.” They face increasingly challenging situations due to legislative inaction and broken promises.
