God made us perfect in His eyes and we are all different in some ways; but at the end of the day, we all are made of bones, muscles, skin, and we all have amazing, caring hearts. Our Sin Fronteras Youth Group Leadership Board members took part in a 5-day service-learning immersion in Immokalee, Florida on Holy Week to reflect on Easter and the contemporary face of Jesus. Our Youth picked tomatoes in the field and made connections with farmworkers. They learned how difficult it is to stand on their feet for hours, picking tomatoes in the scorching sun. They discovered how little they would have made if they were a real farmworker (each bucket of the crop the youth were picking pays only $0.50!).
Our Sin Fronteras were given many opportunities to meet with the amazing residents of Immokalee. They met with Cruz, a farmworker in the area and member of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW). The Youth asked him a range of questions about pay, job justice, and living in the area. They learned not about just the difficulties of being a farmworker, but also the power that an organization like the CIW gives a community.
They had dinner with single moms, and heard stories from them about their every-day pains and struggles. After the moms left, the Youth reflected on all that their own parents give to them: love, food, shelter, friendship.
“I had a pretty bad childhood and I know what it’s like to suffer at a young age. When I see [the Immokalee community], I see a part of myself. I never had anyone tell me it would be okay.”

After a night of reflection with the moms, the Sin Fronteras went to RCMA, a charter school devoted to early childhood development. RCMA is of, by, and for farmworkers. There, our youth group spent time and played with children in the RCMA program and learned more about the importance an organization like RCMA has in its community.
After visiting RCMA, they traveled to Ave Maria, an affluent planned Catholic community located just outside of Immokalee. The Sin Fronteras became cognizant of the wage disparity between Ave Maria and Immokalee. They felt a warm sense of community in Immokalee that they didn’t feel in Ave Maria.
Here’s the amazing part. This was only the first half of the week! Our youth also visited the CIW office, played soccer with Immokalee youth their age, and so much more! It was truly a week of transformation and a blessing for all who participated.

Semana Santa de Transformaciones
Los jóvenes líderes de nuestro grupo Sin Fronteras tuvieron una experiencia de servicio y aprandizaje con la comunidad de Immokalee, FL, durante esta Semana Santa. Allí, reflexionaron sobre los rostros contemporáneos de Jesús. Durante esa semana trabajaron en el campo recogiendo tomates y compartieron con los campesinos. Con ellos, vivieron lo difícil que es trabajar desde tan temprano y pasar largas horas bajo el duro sol de la Florida. Además, se dieron cuenta el poco dinero que hubieran ganado a pesar de todo su esfuerzo. Aprendieron con la Coalición de Trabajadores de Immokalee (CIW) que solo pagan $0.50 por cada cubeta llena de tomates y que pesa 32 libras!
Nuestros jóvenes tuvieron muchas oportunidades de conocer personas increíbles que viven y trabajan en Immokalee. Se reunieron con Cruz, un campesino y activista de la CIW, Los jóvenes le preguntaron diversas dudas que tenían sobre cuánto les pagan a los campesinos que trabajan en el campo, sobre la lucha del movimiento campesino, sobre la vida en Immokalee.
Además, los líderes cenaron con madres trabajadoras. De ellas escucharon las preocupaciones y luchas que enfrentan todos los días y, desde esos testimonios, ellos reflexionaron sobre todo lo que han recibido de sus padres: amor, comida, seguridad, sacrificios.
Otro momento de esta poderosa experiencia fue la visita al centro de cuidado de niños, RCMA. Este centro es para hijos de los trabajadores del campo y quienes trabajan allí son de la misma comunidad. Nuestros jóvenescompartieron y jugaron con los niños y aprendieron más sobre el importante trabajo que hace RCMA en la comunidad.
Entre la aventajada ciudad de Naples y Immokalee, está la ciudad católica Ave María. Nuestros jóvenes visitaron este pequeño pero opulento asentamiento y se dieron cuenta de las diferencias y disparidad entre estas dos ciudades. Se sorprendieron de ver cómo una comunidad de gente con mucho dinero estuviera tan cerca de la comunidad de Immokalee sin que tuvieran ninguna conexión. Con la visita a Ave María reconocieron lo cálida y solidaria que era la comunidad de Immokalee, donde los problemas de cada uno son parte de la lucha de todos.
Estas son algunas de las imágenes y memorias de esta increíble experiencia de nuestros jóvenes. Todo esto pasó sólo en los primeros dos días de la semana! El grupo de líderes también visitó las oficinas de CIW, jugó soccer con otros jóvenes de Immokalee y vivieron hermosos momentos de amistad y solidaridad!
